Survival Kit

Some items (not all inclusive) we've found useful for families traveling along the trail.

Matches - long, wooden, strike anywhere with metal container
Metal match
Compass
Watch
Glasses - extra pair if you wear glasses
Adhesive bandages
Map
Knife
Carborundum - sharpener stone
Ax - light belt ax and more substantial hatchet with leather covers
Plastic sheeting - 2 pieces 4 feet by 8 feet
Tent - small, lightweight, screened tent
Sleeping Bag - air or foam mattress, small inflatable pillow
Extra clothing - especially dry socks, woolen shirt, hood, extra light footwear, pants, underwear, handkerchief
Medicine kit - 4 ounce first-aid kit plus medication for individual troubles
Snakebite kit -
Wire - coil of light wire with wire cutter/pliers
Cord or Rope - 3/8-inch manila or strong nylon cord to hold your weight
Cooking equipment - nested sets of stainless steel are best, canteen
Soap - small bar
Toilet Kit - Small towel, toothbrush, baking soda, comb, manicure scissors, safety razor with spare blades
Whistle - very important especially for each child
Flashlight - spare bulb (inside the spring at the end), batteries
Insect repellent
Binoculars
Paper and pen - for messages, sketching strange country to get back out
Water purification tablets
Fishing outfit - a few yards of good line, 6 hooks, small lead weights, cut pole on spot, safety pins for guides or tie to end of pole
Survival rations
Foam rubber padding - 1 foot square x 1/4-inch for boots if feet get sore
Repair outfit - scissors, needles, thread, tweezers, 2 rolls of narrow adhesive tape, dental floss, pliers, 2 short assorted screwdrivers, fish line on cardboard, rawhide lacing, small compact knife with accessories like can opener, file.
Hudson's Bay Company kit - tea bags, vitamin pills, pilot bread, butter, strawberry, jam, Klik, condensed milk, chocolate bars, double-faced mirror, candles, knife and spoon, tissues, matches.
